Soldering the feeders to every rail joiner is better than no or minimal feeders, but one still has the issue of a poor mechanical joint. As for cleaning the solder joint after you have solder the feeder - you can use 71% isopropyl alcohol to clean the 'Rosin Core Solder Flux' off. D'oh!Īs others have mentioned - Acid Core Solder is for 'plumbing' - Do not use it for electrical work. After a couple of minutes investigating the turnout (the usual culprit!) that connected to it at one end, I looked at the next track join - and discovered that I'd forgotten to file the isolation gap in the copper tie. Last Saturday I was puzzled by the fact that a newly-laid section showed a short circuit. Of course, I've already gotten myself in trouble once doing this. ![]() Yes, I'm using rosin-core electronic solder.Īsk me again in ~5 years how it worked out, long-term. One nice aspect of this is that I'm never soldering near plastic ties. The solder "blob" includes the tie, the joiner, the feeder and both rails. The soldered joints also get 22ga feeders soldered to a copper-clad tie across the bottom of the joiners (which also guarantees the gauge at the joint, where the plastic ties have been removed). Having read that one should have 1) frequent feeders and 2) expansion joints, I'm soldering every second joint of the flex-track, and leaving the alternate joints unsoldered with a ~1mm gap.
